Using ChatGPT for Recruitment and Insights from HR Experts

Written By Jawad Junejo

It is hard to not talk about ChatGPT as it is expected to transform every field. We have gathered the various ways in which this innovation impacts recruitment and what the HR experts are talking about.

As the world becomes increasingly digital, companies that fail to adopt new technologies risk falling behind their competitors. This is especially true in the Recruitment space, where constantly new HR tech trends are taking place. The latest one of these trends is using ChatGPT for recruitment which has taken the world by storm.

Let’s explore different ways in which this technology can revolutionize—and is revolutionizing—HR. In this blog, we are going to highlight the benefits of using ChatGPT in recruitment and what HR experts think about it.

But before taking that leap, let’s first cover the basics.

What is ChatGPT by OpenAI?

In simple terms, ChatGPT is an AI-based chatbot that has been trained to generate human-like text. It is an acronym for Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer (ChatGPT).

Now in technical terms, this bot uses deep learning algorithms to analyze vast amounts of data and generate text that is coherent and contextually relevant. Here is an example.

I commanded this chatbot to write a short poem of two lines about using ChatGPT for recruitment. Here is how it rhymed for me within a few seconds:

Now you are not going to write poems of course but think about all your copywriting content for your employer brand. This is going to nail it for you. I’ll discuss further uses of this mind-boggling product by Open AI.

OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022. The most fascinating fact about it is that it took only a week to get one Million users. It has left behind platforms like Facebook, Netflix, Instagram, Spotify, and iPhone in terms of reaching the one Million mark.

There should be no confusion between OpenAI and ChatGPT though. One is a product and the other one is a company. Open AI is just a research laboratory whose mission is to ensure that the whole of humanity can take benefit from Artificial Intelligence.

Various Possible Uses of ChatGPT for Recruitment

In recruitment, ChatGPT has opened up possibilities of automating various tasks that were the responsibility of Human Resources. From recruiting, and talent acquisition to sourcing, HR professionals can now make their job easy, peasy, lemon-squeezy with ChatGPT.

• Candidate Screening

One of the most significant impacts of ChatGPT on recruitment has been in the area of candidate screening. You can use ChatGPT to conduct initial candidate screenings by asking pre-determined questions and evaluating the candidate’s responses. This will not only save you as a recruiter a significant amount of time, but also it will ensure that all candidates are evaluated based on a consistent set of criteria.

• Creating Compelling Job Descriptions

Another area where ChatGPT has made an impact is in the creation of personalized job descriptions. The model can analyze job requirements, company culture, and candidate profiles to create unique job descriptions that are tailored to each specific position and candidate. This level of personalization has been shown to increase the chances of attracting top-talent fit for your company.

• Scheduling Candidate Interviews

Recruiters have also started using ChatGPT to streamline the scheduling of interviews.

Here’s how you can schedule interviews for candidates through this tool:

  • You can integrate ChatGPT with your applicant tracking system (ATS) or recruitment software to retrieve candidate details, such as contact information, resume, and interview availability.
  • You can then initiate a conversation with ChatGPT and provide the necessary interview details, such as date, time, and location.
  • ChatGPT will then check the candidate’s availability and suggest available time slots for the interview. If the candidate’s availability doesn’t match the suggested time slots, ChatGPT will provide alternate options or allow the recruiter to manually select a different time.
  • Once the interview time is confirmed, ChatGPT can send an automated confirmation message to the candidate, including the interview details and any instructions or preparation materials.
  • ChatGPT can also send reminders and notifications to the candidate and interviewer before the scheduled interview time, either through email, SMS, or chat.

Using ChatGPT in recruitment can save recruiters time and effort in scheduling interviews, while also providing a more efficient and user-friendly experience for candidates.

• Automating Whole Communication with Candidates

The ability to automate the complete communication with the candidate is the most valuable feature of ChatGPT for recruiters. Apart from scheduling interviews with candidates as we mentioned above, here are a few more examples of automating communication with the candidates.

  • You can program ChatGPT to send responses to messages from candidates.
  • With ChatGPT, You can set up automated screening questions to ask candidates during the initial stages of the recruitment process, allowing them to quickly assess whether the candidate is a good fit for the role.
  • You can also train ChatGPT to answer common candidate questions, such as those related to the hiring process or company culture, reducing the workload for recruiters and ensuring a consistent candidate experience.
  • ChatGPT can also provide candidates with information about the role, such as job requirements and responsibilities, as well as answer questions related to the company’s benefits and perks.

• Enhancing Candidate Experience

In addition to its impact on recruitment processes, ChatGPT can also take the whole candidate experience to the next level. Candidates will appreciate your speed and efficiency of the recruitment process because of Chat GPT as they can receive information and updates in real-time.

Positive candidate experience is vital for your employer branding as well. An efficient recruitment process appeals to the candidates and they share their experience online with colleagues.

• Analyzing Data and Identifying Recruitment Trends

Another benefit of ChatGPT in recruitment is its ability to analyze vast amounts of data and identify patterns and trends. This allows you to make data-driven decisions and improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the recruitment process.

Which HR jobs are replaceable with ChatGPT?

All the tasks that recruiters carry out on a repetitive basis are under threat for sure. ChatGPT can automate many of such repetitive and time-consuming HR tasks.

Here is a list of few of the job roles related to Human Resources that might be affected due to ChatGPT, and which human traits are easily replaceable with ChatGPT finesse.

The adoption of ChatGPT is likely to lead to a transformation in the HR industry, requiring HR professionals to adapt to new technologies and become more strategic in their roles. Let’s find out the opinions of those famous HR professionals.

Recruitment Experts Opinions about ChatGPT

There is a flood of opinions about ChatGPT and how is it going to impact the HR industry. The common thing about all the opinions is that the industry leaders have taken it as a positive innovation.

Josh Bersin

Josh is the founder and CEO of Josh Bersin Academy. He focuses on the global talent market and feels enthusiastic about this technology. According to him, ChatGPT offers ‘enormous possibilities’. Bersin seems a little uncertain as he says “as with all new technologies, we cannot fully predict the impact quite yet. There will be problems and failures, but the ultimate story is ‘hooray’.”

As far as the idea of ChatGPT taking away many jobs is concerned, Bersin believes chat GPT can definitely perform all basic HR tasks. According to him, “What might take two or three HR professionals now will be handled by one HR professional and an AI assistant—a version of ChatGPT named something like ‘Mary from Payroll,’ perhaps.”

"My gut feel is that companies like OpenAI and Microsoft will likely compete with many other players (Google, Oracle, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Workday, etc) so every major vendor will “bulk up” on AI and machine learning expertise."

Todd Mitchem

Todd is the CEO of AMP learning and development and he has spent hours using ChatGPT since its launch. He shared his experience of using this AI tool for 15 minutes which enabled him to retool a course on leadership that may have taken hours or days.

Mitchem praises this ChatGPT AI bot and feels that it is great for job seekers. According to him “this is like if the Industrial Revolution slammed into the dot-com era and made a baby traveling at a million miles an hour”, Mitchem added.

"If you’re concerned that using ChatGPT to write your resume feels a bit like cheating, consider that similar tools have been put to work on the recruiting side for years. Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to automatically scan resumes for certain keywords, ranking candidates based on the content in their CV. Now that applicants are using ChatGPT to tailor their job applications, the two systems are basically “talking to each other”"

Tim Sackett

Tim is the HR Tech analyst and an author. He appreciates the speed of quickly evaluating content. According to him, ChatGPT will allow talent acquisition teams to evaluate an entire batch of job applicants without bias. He also emphasizes taking it seriously as it’s going to change work in many ways in the near future.

Sackett believes that ChatGPT will also be able to eliminate bias from hiring candidates: “AI will more consistently generate a higher quality of applicants for us to select from, as most bias will be eliminated and controlled for.” He stated this in his article ‘The Future of Recruiting’.

"...the differentiation between ChatGPT and HR professionals: While you will no longer be needed as the creator of a work product, HR professionals will still be needed to narrate to ChatGPT what they want to create. We will still need smart, sharp, driven HR professionals who know what they're doing. You just won't be the one doing the creating—which will allow you, individually, to do much more."
Talent Tech Analyst
Tim Sackett

Paul Keijzer

The Co-Founder & CEO of the Talent Games expressed his excitement about using ChatGPT for various tasks and how recruiters should make the most out of this technology.

“ChatGPT prevents us from enormous labor and this saves recruiters enough time to focus on other tasks. However, it cannot predict with accuracy what is about to happen. For instance, it can only synthesize the available data and provide us with one answer. The human element is still missing from it.”

Conclusion

In conclusion, the impact of ChatGPT on recruitment has been nothing short of transformative. This innovation has streamlined recruitment processes, improved the candidate experience, and provided recruiters with valuable insights into the recruitment process. As AI continues to advance, it’s likely that ChatGPT and other similar technologies will play an even larger role in recruitment in the future.
